Sámi Jienat – Voices of Sápmi follows the adventures of a Sámi indigenous choir across Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish Sápmi. Getting the members together to rehearse isn’t always easy, but the choir faces other challenges. How much should they focus on yoik - the traditional Sámi way of singing? Who knows how to yoik, and how should it actually be done?
Through the choir, the singers rediscover their rich and unique Sámi heritage, as well as the joy of yoiking together in practice and performance. They describe how yoik works, and its development over centuries despite opposition from both the 'Big Society' and perhaps surprisingly, sometimes from the Sámi community itself. Ultimately the film reflects an indigenous society's struggle for cultural survival, the inevitability of change, and the journey the choir members make together as they find strength and unity in redefining their musical traditions for the modern age.
Featuring a spellbinding soundtrack of both the choir’s songs and traditional yoik, and centred around in-depth interviews with choir members past and present (Ellen Simma Fjellgren, Siri Broch Johansen, Niilo Vuomajoki, Ánte Mikkel Gaup, Marit Ellen Amundsen, Marie Kvernmo, Synnøve Angell, Mary Sarre, Sauli Guttorm, Lars Magne Andreassen), the film employs dramatic cinematography and behind-the-scenes footage of life on the road to provide an insight into the background of the choir, how yoik works, and its development over the centuries.
